Frequently Asked Questions

When a cavity damages the vital structures inside a tooth, root canal treatment is required to remove diseased tissue inside. Antibiotics prevent further spread of the infection but by itself cannot eliminate the infection. The necrotic(dead) tissue inside the tooth must be completely removed for successful healing. Root canal treatment is analogous to a large filling from top to tip of the tooth.
Braces or orthodontic therapy is recommended for those who wishes to straighten healthy misaligned teeth. Veneers maybe indicated to 1.) mask existing discoloration that could not be corrected with teeth whitening alone; 2.) strengthen teeth with large fillings; 3.) change the shape of the tooth(e.g. Teeth that are severely worn and/or small).
Anyone who is nervous or anxious about dental treatment will benefit from sedation. At SmileSense, we offer nitrous oxide – oxygen(laughing gas), oral sedative and IV sedation. IV sedation is ideal for patients who are highly anxious and/or for patients undergoing longer and/or more invasive dental treatment.
Dental sedation is very safe. Your safety is our priority: throughout the procedure your heart rate, breathing, blood oxygen level and blood pressure is monitored continuously. We work closely with our R.N.s to ensure you are safe and relaxed.
We surgically place AstraTech OsseoSpeed Implants manufactured by Dentsply Implants(www.dentsplyimplants.com). A healing period of 4-6 months is customary before the final crown(the visible 'tooth') is placed on the dental implant.
Shannon Sears, RDH, is our friendly neighborhood hygienist. With over 28 years of experience, we guarantee you will have a comfortable experience – yes, we are that confident!

*If you find the dental cleaning uncomfortable at any point during the appointment, Shannon will discontinue the procedure. In consultation with Dr. Chau, she may offer topical/local anesthesia of the affected area and/or sedation modalities that will ensure she can provide adequate treatment to you safely and comfortably.
